History of Communication

In our world, people must "communicate" in order to exist. Communication can be described as the ability to convey information to others using different methods. Throughout history, people have used many different methods, tools and technologies to communicate.

Mass Communication with the Newspaper

Around 1605, an innovation that would change the foundations of communication was made, and the newspaper began its journey among the mass media. The first newspaper printed on paper was published in 1605 by Johann Carolus.

Meeting the Magazine (1672)

The magazine, whose culture continues to this day, was first produced in March 1672 in the city of Paris, France.

The Telegraph

On 10 September 1855, the first telegraph communication began to be carried out in the Ottoman Empire. The İstanbul-Edirne telegraph line was put into operation in 1855, and the İstanbul-Ankara line in 1860. In 1865 our country became a founding member of the International Telecommunication Union.

The Typewriter

William Austin Burt received the first patent for the typewriter in 1829. The first typewriter in the true sense was made in 1868 by Christopher L. Sholes, and it began to be mass-produced by the Remington brand in 1872.

The Telephone

The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876, and people's means of communication suddenly took a rapid leap forward.

The Radio

The radio was invented by Guglielmo Marconi and given to humanity. With the radio, the perception of communication was carried to a very different, higher level.

Television

Television, invented by the Scotsman John Logie Baird, began a brand-new era by transferring sound and images across continents.

The Computer

From ENIAC to personal computers, computers that shrank over time settled into the center of our lives with laptops and tablets.

The First Mobile Phone in Türkiye

The first mobile phones began to be used in our country in the 1990s. The first phone call was made in 1994 between the 9th President Süleyman Demirel and the Prime Minister of the time, Tansu Çiller, over the Turkcell network using a Nokia 1011. The first SMS was sent in 1995; the use of Turkish characters in SMS messages came in 2008.

The First Internet in Türkiye

In 1987, an academic network named TÜVAKA was established under the leadership of Ege University. The first internet connection was made on 12 April 1993 via METU (ODTÜ) with NSFNet in the USA. For this reason, 12 April is regarded as the "birthday" of the internet in Türkiye.

The Internet of Things (IoT)

This is the name given to networks in which physical objects and machines are connected to one another or to larger systems. It was first mentioned by Kevin Ashton in a presentation in 1999. With IPv6, objects can have unique identities.
